Rajya Sabha poll

Campaigning for the lone Rajya Sabha seat has never been as intense and animated as being witnessed now. Manipur sends only one representative to the Rajya Sabha and election for this is being slated for April 8. This time it is a straight fight between two political heavyweights. The ruling Secular Progressive Front(SPF) has pitted the veteran Congress leader Rishang Keishing against Radhabinod Koijam, consensus nominee of the Opposition Democratic people's Alliance (DPA).

Interestingly there are certain similarities between the two contestants. For one both of them are former Chief Ministers. While Rishang became a loyal congressman through thick and thin, Radhabinod Koijam left the party to join the Samata Party and eventually became the Chief Minister, whose Government lasted barely four months. Rishang Keishing ruled the State for a record five times. But both the candidates were defeated in 8th Manipur Legislative Elections.

Not so long ago Rishang created sort of history by deciding to sit in the Opposition even if he was alone in the Opposition bench, when Radhabinod Koijam led away the rest of the Congress MLAs to the Samata Party on the eve of the fall of Nipamacha Government. It may not be an exaggeration to suggest that both the candidates are experienced Parliamentarians and qualified enough to represent the State in the Upper Hose. The combined strength of the SPF has been increased to 38 with joining of the two Democratic Peoples Party legislators in a sixty member House.

If one goes by the respective strengths election of Rishang Keishing is a foregone conclusion. But the Opposition Alliance is hoping that some ruling members will indulge in cross voting in favor of Radhabinod Koijam. Although confident of winning the seat the ruling Front is not ready to take chances. It is precisely because of this reason that the two DPP members were brought into the coalition fold. The fear of the SPF leaders is not without foundation.

It is feared that those against the candidature of Rishang Keishing may betray the Front. Perhaps it may be for the first time, if reports are to be believed, that camps of MLAs are being opened in view of the upcoming election. This shows that sending our representative to the Rajya Sabha is being taken very seriously by both the ruling front and the Opposition, unlike in the past which witnessed a low key affair.

But this development is disturbing. The Opposition is accusing the ruling Front of buying MLAs to ensure victory of Rishang Keishing. But what is disgusting most is the manner in which both sides are indulging in personalized tirades. While the honorable members are expected to watch their language, it will be in the interest of the State as a whole if the debate is focused on general well being of the State and the people, whose woes are brimming issues to be presented in the Parliament and before the Central leaders rather than indulging in mudslinging match.
