The need for a State rest house at Dimapur has never been felt greater and the initiatives taken up by the Dimapur Meitei Union to build a rest house at the border town of Nagaland will surely go a long way in fulfilling the needs of wearied travelers. A rest place at Dimapur where one can stretch one's legs and find a roof over the head for the night in familiar surroundings and in the safe company of fellow travelers will surely proof a great boon to many of the people who have to go outside the State by road.
With air travel increasingly becoming exorbitant and out of reach of the common people and in the absence of a rail head, the only option available to the common people coming back home after a long stint outside the State, Dimapur is one place that rings a familiar tone and the State rest house there will contribute significantly in making the joy of coming back home all that more pleasant.
At the moment the State has four State Bhawans outside Manipur. Two at Delhi, one at Kolkata and another at Guwahati. How well maintained these Bhawans are is a different matter but the reassuring feeling these bhawans offer to the travelers especially to the first timers is significant. That the initiatives for building the rest house at Dimapur is being taken up by a voluntary organizations without any significant contributions from the State Government makes it all that more note worthy and the Dimapur Meitei Union deserves unreserved accolades for their efforts.
Gratitude should also be extended to the Nagaland Minister of Planning, Co-ordination and Urban Development, Imti Sungit Jamir for generously contributing a sum of Rs 1 lakh towards construction of the rest house.
Traffic on NH-39 is increasing by the day and it will only go on increasing. With the burgeoning population the demand for goods from outside the State will only increase and the rest house at Dimapur will serve not only the wearied travelers but also truckers and transporters. The increasing numbers of students studying outside the State will also mean more people taking the road on the highway and passing through Dimapur enroute to their final destination. By extension this also means that students coming home for their vacations will find a resting place at Dimapur.
With medical facilities here not much to write home about, the number of patients and the sick and ailing going outside Manipur for medical treatment will only see a rise and the rest house at Dimapur will proof a boon not only to the patients but also to the patient party. In as much as the rest house is there for the benefits of the travelers, it also becomes very important for the people to realize that we reciprocate and show that we care for the place that offers us a roof for the night and may we add a sanctuary, a home away from home.
The people should take extra care to see that the place is maintained well and all the travelers should take it upon themselves to see that the rest house is not treated merely as a resting place for further journeys but an institution to cater the needs of the people for all time to come. Decorum and civic sense should be accorded top priority while staying at the rest house. In short maintenance of the rest house, once it opens, should be the priority of the Manipuris.
