For No Fault of Yours
The reports of security forces committing excesses at Dongshun and Liplen Kuki villages in the aftermath of the KRA attack on AR convoy killing 11 of them who were on duty in connection with the civic action program carried out at Dongshun is really alarming.
The security personnel have the habit of extracting the pound of flesh from the poor and innocent people as retaliatory action for the crimes committed against them by the UG elements. As if the state is under Nazi power when Hitler unleashed a reign of terror on Jews, who made political miscalculation in supporting Hitler in the election the people are always at the receiving end.
After all what could unarmed people do to prevent the gun wielding youths from carrying out their armed actions in the places of their choice? The innocent people have landed in the situation of helplessness caught between Devils and the Deep Sea. The Government should think of finding a lasting solution to such security excesses. Is the time yet to rise for the entire people of the state to realize what is ailing the state and its people? The people of the state should rise in one voice to prevent recurrence of such crimes in future.
The UG elements too should have to be warned against carrying out their armed activities in the crowded areas. The men in uniform say that they too are human beings and they have family members and they also feel the sentiment when their partners who share the same room and dine together at the same dining hall are snatched away by the cruel death.
Therefore they run amok when they see the blood that came out oozing from the compatriots who live together with them. More unfortunate is that the common and innocent people are paying the price for all these crimes committed by the gun wielding youths. Do we have to bear with it? How can such crimes be avoided? Such crimes can be avoided if the security personnel take steps to ensure that they do not become easy targets of the armed gunmen.
If Manipur is a war-like situation, the security personnel should move as they do in the war field. For, the common men always suffer in the aftermath of such armed confrontation between two extremes. Examples are not lacking. In all such armed confrontations the sufferers always happen to be the innocent people who have nothing to gain from such fight.
The Government of Manipur should pay attention to take steps to ensure that such crimes do not recur in future. Enough is enough. The appeal should be made, direct to the human conscience to drive home where all these activities are leading. Political settlement not military solution will be the lasting one to Manipur problems. Begin the spadework to bring the UG elements back to the negotiating table.
