Importance of June14 and June 18
Last year around these times as the Union Govt. continued talks with the NCSN (IM) leaders in the Bangkok blood began to boil in the state in particular and the other state in the NE region. The region being the talk focused mainly on extension of cease-fire to the state of Manipur and other state beyond Nagaland. What followed was blood curdling activities. At last 18 precious lives were sacrificed on the altar of martyrdom.
June 14 and June 18 will remain as a red-letter day in the modern history of Manipur. The two days will be important as they are associated with the movement against the extension of Indo-Naga cease-fire to the state of Manipur. 18 persons lost their lives as the state instantaneously rose against the cease fire extension to Manipur. These martyrs did not die for a foolish cause. Kekrupat where the last rites of these martyrs were performed will remain as a sacred place to the people.
It seems the Union Govt. had failed to gauge the sentiment, the people of the state attached to the territorial integrity issue. The state cannot be divided on communal line. One wonders if the Center is thinking of committing the folly again. A state in turmoil will be more severe and bringing it back to normalcy will not be as easy as holding talks with the underground elements. The Union Government has not been able to instill confidence in the minds of the affected people that the territorial integrity of the state will not be touched at as followed by the Indo-Naga ceasefire talk.
There are reports of dividing Senapati and Ukhrul district from Manipur and merging with Nagaland. Such report is alarming. And it creates restlessness in the mind of the people of the state. Chief Minister of Manipur O Ibobi had timely warned the Union Govt. of the fall out of such divisive move.
Manipur belongs to all communities. If anybody desires to leave the state it is purely their desire and nothing can stand between the individual and his thought. Such desire cannot be challenged. But the idea of talking away the land with the individual is a false dream, which will never materialize. Such move will arouse the patriotic feeling of the entire people of the state.
Now AMUCO has decided to observe both June 14 and June 18. The entire people of the state should join the celebrations of the two days to tell those at the helm of affairs in Delhi that Manipuris are holding the issue seriously. It is time the Center realize that territorial integrity issue is not a play thing. Ours is different from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. Because ours was a free nation before its merger into the Union of India, protected by the King of the then free Manipur.
The Center stands warned that a fragmented Manipur will be as severe as atomic bombing resembling the devastation of a severe war with a hostile nation. The state Govt. too should think of joining the June 14 and June 18 celebration. That will not only mean showing respect to the martyrs of the state but also will send a message to the Center that the Govt. of the state stand to protect the territorial integrity of the state.
