The Temple of Learning Must Be Sacrosanct
The poor financial state of affairs of Manipur University was reflected recently. Our prestigious varsity remained without electricity for almost three weeks. The cause of the power failure was attributed to a transformer. Further, it came to light that the varsity had to deposit a sum of Rs 30,000
for the said transformer.
The dilly dallies in the transaction of the said amount and the lack of
communication between the varsity officials and the electricity department also resulted in the delay in ensuring a non-stop power supply to the varsity. The agitated students resorted to an unprecedented action by locking up the room of the vice-chancellor.
Now, the varsity must have done an internal assessment as to how much research work had to be stopped midway owing to the power failure. There is already news doing the round that many research students have to all over start their work as data collection was affected by the breakdown of power.
In retrospect, one can say that it was a very serious matter that the whole functioning of a university was interrupted for a sum of Rs 30,000 or whatever the matters were. If paucity of fund is the root cause of every malfunctioning of the varsity, the students, the academic and the administrative staff have every reason to rejoice.
The recent visit by a team of University Grants Commission comprising the vice-chancellor of IGNOU to have a first hand study of the state of affairs of the varsity should be a morale booster. The Prime Minister's Office also having committed to pour some financial assistance is definitely a sigh of relief for the institution, which is the backbone of our source of think tank. The amount, however less or more, has come at the most appropriate time. It has come when the entire community of the varsity is crying for financial aid.
Now, what fears the onlookers is the appropriateness of the spending team. We all wish to see that every single penny is spent in the right manner. The whole state should encourage a transparent and a corruption free atmosphere in the varsity at least.
The well-known story of percentage and booty sharing
at different levels or entities should have some sense of morality. Our coming generations will have to pass through this varsity as a threshold someday to serve, the people in the purest form. It takes a sane and brave decision to work for the humanity. Our lone varsity being the temple of learning for the betterment of
humanity should be left alone to a set an example.
The existence of Manipur University Teachers' Association and Manipur University Students' Union, especially the later has to prove its meaningful purpose. There is also a belief among the people of the state that the students' community in the varsity has less commitment to the growth of this institution. They have to prove this notion wrong by their action. Whatever amount demarcated for the varsity should be spent and utilized to the last penny as aimed.
