Komrem’s Platinum Jubilee
By Sobhapati Samom
The platinum jubilee of the Komrem Students' Union was held on December 13 with much fanfare, a day after the historic NUPI LAN day celebration, at the Bhagyachandra Open Air Theatre in Imphal under the theme 'Initiatives of Change: Youth festival -a mosaic of culture'. It was a D-day for the entire Komrem population of around 33,066 (according to 2001 census) spreading across 93 villages forming an indigenous minority group in this tiny border state.
Komrem is a united banner of five small tribes Aimol, Chiru, Koireng, Kom and Purum and they are akin to the Hrangkhawl, Darlong, Chakachep, Bete etc of Assam and Tripura. Among the five small tribes, the Kom tribe is the most populous.
According to KSU President Emboi Serti, Komrem in its internal translation means 'cave' or 'khur' while the syllable 'rem' means people." Komrem arose out of the cultural affinity among these five component tribes" Emboi added.
Komrems being animists in their religious beliefs, they occupy buffer zones between the hills and the plains in Manipur. As a result both Manipur Governor Ved Marwah and Chief Minister Okram Ibobi who were the chief guest and president of the platinum jubilee celebrations this time made it clear that such a gathering will help in ensuring a sense of oneness among the people of Manipur.

Even the Chief Minister Ibobi while appreciating the landmark and historic achievement of Mary Kom, who bagged a gold medal in the World Women Boxing, said that the multi-ethnic populace of Manipur is something equated with that of a garland of different colors of flowers.
The Manipur Governor Ved Marwah also asserted that seventy five years of existence of the Komrem Students Union shows the unity and commitment of its members to the cause of communal harmony and socio-economic development of Manipur.
In the second session of the day long celebration Speaker of the Manipur state Legislative Assembly T N Haokip and Maharaj Sanajaoba Leishemba were the chief guest and president respectively.
The food and civil supplies minister Pheiroijam Parijat, commander of Sector 9 Brig E J Kochekkan, DIG BSF P K Mishra and Director of arts and culture P Achouba also attended the second session as distinguished guests.
A series of traditional dances, well crafted and well designed fashion parade performed by Komrem models currently studying in various educational institutions across the country, presentation of special numbers and sequence of cultural shows were the main highlight of the jubilee celebration. Interestingly ACK2P, a musical band of the Komrems enthralled the gathering in between the breaks by rendering special numbers.
Apart from the chief minister Ibobi's donation of Rs 20, 000, Mary Kom, the pugilist and pride of the Komrem community also donated a sum of Rs 40,000 to the organizer.
